Why you can trust us

Lauren Brooks is an ergonomist and sleep coach who previously worked at a physical therapy practice. For this guide we tested 9 models over 6 weeks in our test house. We bought most models ourselves; loaned units were returned after testing. Manufacturers don’t see our conclusions before publication.

Who is this for?

A baby monitor lets you hear or see when your child wakes up. A model with its own parent unit also works without Wi-Fi, which many parents prefer.

How we tested

We tested range through walls and floors, parent unit battery life, audio and video delay, and night vision quality.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Wi-Fi baby monitor safe?+

It can be, if the manufacturer offers encryption and two-factor authentication. A model with its own parent unit doesn’t connect to the internet.

How far does a baby monitor reach?+

Manufacturers often state 1,000 feet in open space. Indoors, the models in our test reached 80 to 200 feet.
